Ulrik Hjort Lassen was born in 1979 in Faaborg, Denmark.
He completed his secondary studies in June 1998, and decided to set off to discover the world and to learn his trade. His first stop was Norway in 1998–99, where he worked as a carpenter. He then travelled for four years, learning languages along the way, including English, German, Spanish, French and Swedish. He completed the first part of his training as a carpenter at the Danish vocational school in 2004, started his own business in 2004–2006, and then enrolled at the preservation department at the University of Göteborg (Sweden) for a degree in construction.
"I'm interested in Danish, French and German traditions."
He continues to work as an intern in various firms, and takes part in trainings abroad (in France, Germany, and the UK). He also is helping to develop a European exchange network for carpenters. In September 2007, he began a five-year PhD program within the framework of Dacapo at the University of Göteborg, and is involved in an experimental research programme on the various traditional tools used in the wood construction trades.
